Creating Inclusive Schools

This workshop will considerkey issues around the theme of inclusivity and focus delegates on practical means of developing an inclusive school ethos.

 

Delegates will explore developing professional attitudes and perspectives on inclusion, consider good practice and discuss and consider how to make practical improvements in their own context. The workshop will be presented through a range of activities that will be high paced, interactive and use a range of media.

 

Learning objectives

 

At the end of the course participants will have:

  • developed a clear understanding of the concept of inclusion
  • developed a broad knowledge of the legislative framework  underpinning inclusive practice in Scottish schools
  • examined the curricular issues relating to inclusion
  • considered the concept of Additional Support Needs
  • explored practices of inclusion and exclusion, especially in relation to additional needs in the emotional and behavioural areas
  • considered practice and experiences of inclusion and exclusion in relation to race, gender and sexuality
  • reviewed the extent to which cooperation across agencies and professions is essential to inclusive practice
  • initiated a brief evaluation of the inclusive strengths and weaknesses of their own institution.

This workshop is appropriate for those working with young people in a wide variety of settings across both the statutory and voluntary sectors, particularly secondary teachers, principal teachers, DHTs and HTs; local authority educational leaders; social workers, educational psychologists, youth workers and other professionals working in and with secondary schools.

Facilitator: Alex Wood

Alex Wood is an educational consultant. He is a qualified teacher with over 25 years direct experience working in schools as a teacher, principal teacher of Learning Support and latterly as headteacher of Wester Hailes Education Centre until 2011. Alex a skilled presenter and communicator, committed to the continuing development of professional skills among all of those supporting young people.
